GREAT NECK HIGH SCHOOL

60th REUNION CLASS OF 1959

INTERIM UPDATE #1: The Great Neck High School Class of 1959 has completed our 60th Reunion Cruise to the Bahamas and a Reunion Luncheon in Boca Raton, Florida. Photos of these reunions are now available; click here or on the 60th Reunion Photos tab.

Before going any further, your Webmaster would like to personally thank all of those classmates who participated in our reunion cruise and made it successful beyond imagination. It was an incredibly warm and friendly gathering for all, with adequate time to get together, catch up, and reminisce. With all of that in mind, I would like to share a thank you email that I recently received regarding our reunion cruise.

Louisa and I had a wonderful time!

It was so good to see some old friends — no pun intended; lots of good discussion, and lots of laughs. The ship’s crew was wonderful to us. The room steward was able to correct an unsleepable mattress. The Maître D, Placidus, and Chef Taylor, were so attentive to Louisa’s Celiac problem. To make up for her blah chicken at dinner on Friday, he gave us both a lobster dinner on Saturday evening, totally out of our dinner package — no charge. Yummy!

On Sunday night, he made her his home specialty — he is Jamaican — Jerk Chicken. It was delicious. All was forgiven.

All in all, it was the best vacation I ever had, especially with my daughter along.

Thank you for all your planning, and for staying in touch with us all.

I love the website, and all the news you provide with it. I hope you’re going to post the pictures from the cruise on the website; I look forward to that.

I liked the small group; it gave us a chance to talk and spend quality time [with] people we hadn’t seen for years. At the fiftieth, the group was so big, it was hard to talk to anyone!

So, thanks again, Mike, for everything!

Cheers,

Pat Danielson ‘59

We are indebted to Mike Arlow who set up the website, organized the class directory and led the drive to organize the initial 60th reunion and to Barbara Cohen Poles who made all of the arrangements for both the cruise and the brunch. Without them, neither event would have taken place.

The virtually unanimous conclusion of those who attended the two events was that we would like to keep getting together periodically on a group basis. With more than 80 classmates living full or part time in Florida (almost all in South Florida) including all of those who helped plan the events, unless there are others who would like to step up and lead the next get-together, we think it makes sense to plan it in South Florida.

It should be noted that seven classmates who went on the cruise live outside of Florida. Also, other classmates who do not live in Florida have said they would attend Florida events if they had sufficient notice to schedule their visits well in advance.

Accordingly, we propose that in the next year we should have one or two South Florida brunches, lunches or dinners. Perhaps, one should be held the first weekend in December and the second in mid to late March.

We’d love to hear your thinking about this. Please respond by clicking here.

Once we get a sense of the group’s thinking we will start planning the next event(s) and let you know the date(s) so that a larger number of classmates can plan to attend.
